Axis body worn solution

An Axis body worn solution is one or more body worn systems (BWS) connected to a content destination. A BWS captures video and audio, manages cameras and users, and transfers recordings to the destination. AXIS Body Worn Live adds a separate path for real-time video.

A BWS consists of body worn cameras, docking stations, system controllers, and AXIS Body Worn Manager. It can also use an optional RFID reader for camera self-assignment.

System architecture

ComponentWhat it does
Body worn camerasCapture video and audio and store recordings until the camera is docked.
Docking stationsCharge cameras and provide the physical connection for transferring data to the system controller.
System controllerManages the system, buffers recordings, and transfers content to the content destination over HTTPS.
AXIS Body Worn ManagerProvides web-based configuration and administration.
RFID readerOptionally, lets camera users self-assign available cameras with a self-assign tag.
Content destinationYour application. Receives recordings and associated metadata from the system controller.

A single BWS can scale by adding extension system controllers. Extension controllers inherit settings from the primary controller and are managed through AXIS Body Worn Manager.

How recordings are transferred

Recordings move from a body worn camera to a docking station, then to the system controller and content destination:

  1. The camera records video while undocked.
  2. The user docks the camera in a docking station.
  3. The docking station transfers the recording to the system controller.
  4. The system controller buffers the content and transfers it to the content destination.
  5. The camera storage is freed after the transfer is confirmed.

The system controller is a buffer, not a long-term store. If your application is unavailable, recordings queue on the system controller until the connection is restored. The Content destination integration concept explains how to build the receiving application.

Recording triggers

Cameras record while undocked. Recording can be triggered by:

  • Pressing the recording button.
  • Always-record mode.
  • Fall detection.
  • A wireless broadcast from another camera or from an AXIS W401 Body Worn Activation Kit.
  • Unholstering, with a compatible holster sensor.

Recordings can include configurable prebuffer and postbuffer, so the event is captured around the trigger.

Live streaming

AXIS Body Worn Live runs alongside the recording workflow. Starting a live stream also starts a recording if recording isn't already in progress. The recording remains on the camera and later transfers through the docking workflow to the content destination.
